Debugging the failure showed that the wish application was in the Git bin directory.
Turns out that wish is a part of the Tk framework, specifically the version provided by ActiveState which is used as part of the hideous looking git gui.
Git gui is the usable but awful looking git client that comes with Git.
So next time you see that your wish has stopped working don't panic.
Mind you if your computer tells you that "Hope Application has stopped working" and "Future has developed a Fatal Exception" you're on your own.
